TOPIC:  Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) – Requirements, Categorisation, Reporting

SUMMARY: On 1 July 2020 the new Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) replaced the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS). AICIS introduced a new risk based introduction scheme which was radically different from the previous NICNAS scheme. In July 2020 Adrian presented an overview of AICIS with an emphasis on the categorisation of new introductions of industrial chemicals.

• A reprise on the overview of AICIS.
• Further information on the categorisation of new introductions of industrial chemicals.
• Introduction of the Chemintro computer program to carry out instantaneous categorisation of new introductions of industrial chemicals.
• Information on pre-introduction reporting of reported industrial chemicals.
• Information on post-introduction declaration of exempted industrial chemicals.
• Information on annual reporting of introduced industrial chemicals.
• Advice to introducers on complying with AICIS requirements for introduction of industrial chemicals contained in:
• • Industrial chemical raw materials.
  • Finished product formulations (e.g. surface coatings, including paints, inks, adhesives and cosmetics) containing industrial chemicals.
• Adrian's experience to date with AICIS audits and why introducers should be careful to avoid making unnecessary mistakes.
