Bio-Based Latex Paint for Interior and Exterior Wall Coatings

Recently the trend towards bio-based products have gained high interest from a number of paint companies in Asia Pacific, particularly after a few of the big players, such as PPG and AkzoNobel, launched Bio-based Latex Paints last year in the EU & US. The coatings market especially architectural coatings needs differentiation in a crowded retail market, the requirement is for more than just a “Green” product, also needs awareness from the end user and building owner. In this paper is discussed and elaborated how to make a bio-based latex paint for durable interior and exterior wall application, the paint is made of sugar, corn starch, vegetable oil and waste material. Identification of bio-based content in the paint will also be discussed included paint performance and benchmarking against commercial products made of fossil derivatives.
