Mr Andy Swartz – Dow

Durability and Sustainability of Exterior Coatings

According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), by the year 2030, the world population, will need 30% more water, 40% more energy and 50% more food while reducing GHG emissions by 40%. Clearly there is an immediate and continuing need to improve the sustainability of the materials and energy required for society.

Exterior coatings can improve eco-profile by using less energy consuming raw materials (such as TiO2), employing renewable raw materials and achieving a longer service life. Proposed mechanism and studies to better understand and limit photocatalytic degradation of exterior coatings and options for increasing their service life will be discussed.
