Longer lasting paint with multifunctional additives – paint optimisation as an approach to sustainability

When it comes to making the most sustainable and cost-effective waterborne architectural paint, it is highly desirable to minimise additives that are normally not needed in the dry film.

To stabilise the paint with minimum additives, it is necessary to utilise an additive that is truly multifunctional to solve most of the issues associated with water based paint. Established as the industrial standard multifunctional additive, amino methyl propanol (AMP) provides better dispersion and dispersion stabilisation of pigments, storage stability, pH control in the can, and stability control of drying film, while extending the microbial resistance in waterborne paint formulations when used in combination with approved biocides.

The synergy between AMP and certain biocides also allows reduction of biocide used. This helps to make the paint more sustainable for the environment. Similarly, the chemistry’s unmatched versatility can be used to reduce the amount of other commonly used paint additives such as dispersant, surfactant, defoamer, and glycol. This helps manufacturers reduce their formulation cost and manufacturing footprint while improving the performance and sustainability of their paint formulations.

Ding Bo joined ANGUS Chemical Company as a Customer Application Specialist in July 2016. In this role, he is responsible for application development in paints and coatings, polymers, mineral slurries and electronic materials as well as providing technical service supporting Japan, Korea, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Prior to joining ANGUS, Ding Bo was a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University developing materials and prototype devices for energy storage.

Ding Bo holds a PhD degree in Material Science and Electrochemistry from the University of Singapore. Ding Bo is based in Singapore at ANGUS Chemical Company’s Singapore Customer Application Center.
